HiAce Van: Speed-related humming / droning
Suspect the wheel hub bearing first (the bearing the wheel turns on). On high-mileage HiAces, a hum or drone that grows with speed almost always ends up here. Whether it's front or rear, left or right: if the noise changes in bends (louder in right-hand bends means the left side, and so on) you can narrow it down. It's easy to confuse with uneven tyre wear or differential noise, so the final check is jacking it up and turning the wheel by hand.
What to suspect, in order
- How to tell (things you can check yourself)
- A drone that rises with speed and doesn't change with engine revs (even coasting in neutral). It gets louder or quieter in bends. When bad, vibration reaches the steering wheel and floor.
- If you leave it
- Play damages the brake disc and hub, adding to the bill. A seized bearing can lock a wheel while driving — dangerous.

Confirm with an inspection. Have the wheel jacked up and turned to check for play and noise.
FAQ
- How do I tell it from tyre noise?
- Tyre noise changes tone with the road surface. Bearing noise ignores the surface, changes only with speed, and shifts on one side in bends.
- Replace only one side?
- Replacing the noisy side fixes it. The other side has the same mileage and won't be far behind, so doing both is a reasonable call.
- Can I keep driving?
- While it's only noise, yes; once there's steering vibration or play, get it done soon. Avoid long motorway runs.

If it starts droning at motorway speed, jack it up and rock the wheel. Play means the hub bearing. On the HiAce one side usually goes first.
