HiAce Van: Coolant leak / coolant loss

On early petrol models (up to 2010) the plastic pipe behind the intake manifold almost always cracks. Replace it with the metal countermeasure part and you're done. On the radiator, check the seam of the top tank.

Suspect the radiator first (cracks at the seam of the plastic tank). Next the base of the radiator hoses, then the plastic water bypass pipe that cracks on early models. If coolant is dropping but nothing is visible around the radiator, look at this pipe deep at the back of the engine. Thermostat and water pump are less common in the cases.

With the engine cold, open the bonnet and look at the top and bottom seams of the thin box at the front (the radiator). Whitish powder or dried coloured stains mean it's seeping. You may find a green or pink puddle where you park.
If you leave it
Coolant drops steadily and the engine runs hot more easily. Left alone it can overheat and stop on the road.

With the engine cold, gently squeeze the thick rubber hoses to the radiator. Sticky surfaces, visible cracks, or dampness at the clamped ends are suspicious.

A split hose dumps coolant at once. The temperature spikes and you may be stuck on the spot.

Once the crack spreads, coolant is lost all at once and the engine overheats. Catching it while it's a slow loss is cheaper.

FAQ

Coolant is dropping — can I keep driving?
Keep an eye on the gauge even on short trips. If it climbs higher than usual or a light comes on, stop somewhere safe, switch off and call. Even with slow loss, avoid long trips until the cause is known.
Can I top up with tap water for now?
As an emergency, yes, but coolant also prevents freezing and corrosion, so don't keep driving on water. Never open the cap while hot — wait until cold and add a little at a time.
How long does the repair take?
Depends on the source. A hose is quick; a part that must be ordered can take days. We give an estimate once the leak is located.
Will it pass the inspection?
A coolant leak is flagged. Expect to have it fixed before the test.
