HiAce Van (1KD): Check engine light on
Suspect the injectors first (they atomise the fuel), then the supply pump (high-pressure fuel pump). On a diesel HiAce, when the check engine light comes on, faults on the fuel delivery and injection side come top. Also on the list: a clogged DPF (diesel particulate filter), a dirty fuel filter and, rarely, worn piston rings.

- Look for whitish, heavy smoke from the exhaust, a strong exhaust smell when stopped, and idle staying high for a while after driving. Some cars have a dedicated DPF lamp, so check what the symbol actually means.

FAQ
- Can I keep driving with the light on?
- Often you can, but drive cautiously. If the light is flashing, power is down, or noise or smoke has increased, stop driving and get in touch.
- How long does the repair take?
- It depends on the part. Filters are quick; injector, pump or DPF work may take days including parts ordering.
- Will it pass the Japanese inspection (shaken) with the light on?
- A lit warning lamp is flagged at inspection. Fix the cause and have the lamp off before the test.
- It went off by itself — is it fine now?
- The fault code is usually still stored and the light will return when conditions repeat. Getting it checked while it's off makes the cause easier to pin down.
