HiAce Van: Engine won't start (starter doesn't turn)

Mechanic's note (reviewed by Tama Inc.)

Bright dash but only a click? Starter. If a jump start doesn't work either, that's almost certainly it.

Suspect the battery and the starter motor first; they are tied in our cases. Telling them apart is easy: dim dash lights mean battery; bright lights with just a click or silence mean starter. If a jump start doesn't work, it's the starter side. Occasionally a blown fuse or broken wire gives no response at all when you turn the key.

Based on 6 nationwide repair cases

What to suspect, in order

#1Battery2 cases 20%
How to tell (things you can check yourself)
The starter turns slowly or you get rapid clicking. Dash lights and headlights are dim. Typical after a few days parked or on cold mornings.
If you leave it
One day there's no response at all. A weak battery also stresses the starter.

#2Starter motor2 cases 20%
How to tell (things you can check yourself)
Dash is bright but you get one click and no crank, or silence. It starts after several tries. A jump start doesn't help. Especially weak on cold mornings.
If you leave it
No-starts become more frequent until you're stranded. Better before you need a tow.
Typical repair cost
Too few cases with a recorded price to give a figure
Typical model years and mileage
More common on high-mileage vans and delivery use with many starts a day.
#3Fuel filter1 cases 10%
How to tell (things you can check yourself)
Cranks but won't start, or runs rough after. Diesel with an overdue fuel filter, or the fuel filter warning light has been on.
If you leave it
Fuel starvation can stop the engine on the move.
Typical repair cost
Too few cases with a recorded price to give a figure
#4Fuel pump1 cases 10%
How to tell (things you can check yourself)
Cranks but won't start. No fuel pump hum when you turn the key to ON (petrol models).
If you leave it
No fuel delivery means immobile.
Typical repair cost
Too few cases with a recorded price to give a figure
#5Fuse / relay1 cases 10%
How to tell (things you can check yourself)
No response at all when you turn the key — no dash lights, no ACC power. Chafed wiring blowing a fuse has been seen.
If you leave it
Replacing the fuse without fixing the chafed wire means it blows again.
Typical repair cost
Too few cases with a recorded price to give a figure

Confirm with an inspection. Measuring battery voltage and power at the starter separates the two on the spot.

FAQ

Can I jump start it?
If the battery is the cause, yes. Connecting the cables in the wrong order can damage electronics, so call if unsure. If a jump doesn't work, the starter is likely.
I heard tapping it makes it start?
With worn starter contacts, a light tap can make it work once. It's a stop-gap and a sign it needs replacing.
Is a rebuilt starter OK?
Most cases used rebuilt units. In cold regions some fitted a higher-output type.
