HiAce Van (2KD): Stalling / stops while driving
Suspect the supply pump first (it sends diesel at high pressure), then the injectors. When either stops delivering fuel properly the engine can cut out on the move. Less often it's the lift pump side; how it stops and how easily it restarts give clues.
What to suspect, in order
- How to tell (things you can check yourself)
- Power fades while your foot is on the accelerator and then the engine dies. Right after it stops it cranks but won't catch, then starts again after a rest. The check engine light may come on, and some report whitish smoke or vibration before warm-up, or an unusual metallic whine from the engine.
- If you leave it
- Stalls become more frequent until you're stuck on the roadside. Metal shavings from inside the pump can travel into the fuel lines, and the injectors and other parts may need replacing too.
- Typical repair cost
- Too few cases with a recorded price to give a figure
- Typical model years and mileage
- 2004–2006 model years、55,000–169,500 km (median 138,500 km)。Tends to affect older, high-mileage vehicles.
- How to tell (things you can check yourself)
- Early signs are an irregular idle and shaking at traffic lights. It may hiccup mid-acceleration and stall. Thick black smoke, worse fuel economy and long cranking are further clues.
- If you leave it
- One or more cylinders keep misfiring, the vibration stresses other parts, and stalls become more frequent until you're stranded.

FAQ
- Can I keep driving with these symptoms?
- Not recommended. If the engine stops on the move, steering and brakes become heavy. Avoid motorways and traffic jams and get it checked soon. If it stops somewhere dangerous, don't force it — arrange a flatbed.
- How long does the repair take?
- It depends on parts availability and how contaminated the fuel system is. A pump fault often means flushing the lines too, which adds days. We give an estimate after the initial inspection.
- Will it pass the inspection (shaken)?
- Stalling itself isn't a test item, but a lit warning lamp fails, and heavy black smoke can fail the emissions test. Narrow down the cause before the test.
- Will a new fuel filter fix it?
- If a blockage is the cause, it can help. If the pump or injectors are worn, it will come back. The state of the old filter is itself a clue.

This page shows what to suspect first, based on aggregated nationwide repair cases and our own experience. Always confirm the cause with an inspection. Repair costs are medians and ranges from the cases; they vary by vehicle condition, region and workshop.

On the 2KD, stalling is classic supply pump territory, but there are cases fixed by replacing only the SCV (suction control valve) rather than the whole pump. Check when the fuel filter was last changed first.
